COMMENTS:
The second most prevalent pen in my own collection, Balance offers a
huge range of variants to hunt, what with its successful production run
from 1929-1941. This 1935-ish long-slender pen, with its "Sheaffer 3"
nib, would in couple years gain the name Craftsman. It cost $3.50 when
made. This one has clean trim, excellent color preservation, and a sharp
manufacturer's imprint and writes a fine firm, smooth, wet line. |

COMMENTS:
Sheaffer introduced Jade Celluloid to pendom in the early-mid 1920s.
The 5-30 (one step below Lifetime/White Dot) had black ends until
nearly the end of the run. This one has very clean color, not
"perfect" but top 5th-10th percentile. You can see hint of darkening
near the barrel's ends. Razor sharp manufacturer's imprint. Bit of
brassing: You can see it on clip ball and at very top of clip; also
speck or two present on cap-band. Cap-band also has couple pin dings. A
nice write. |

COMMENTS: Balance
is the second most prevalent pen in my own collection, the few hundred
examples I've hunted still running short compared to the Parker
Vacumatic accumulation. One can find a huge range of models and
colors. Golden Pearl striated Celluloid was introduced in 1936 and
continued beyond the end of the series. Sovereign is the long-slender,
high-line, White Dot/Lifetime pen, lever-filler, with original cost of
$8.75. This one pops. Very clean example. Smooth quite fine point.
Excellent transparency to the Visometer gripping section (barrels are
opaque on lever-fillers). A nice high quality entry-to-collecting Balance. |

COMMENTS: A frankly rare Balance variant in nice condition. The
Autograph line references Balances with solid gold trim, generally
found in black plastic (early Marine Green also not too hard to find).
In Gray Pearl (red veined gray) I've fewer than 10 the past 20 years, split evenly between this
long-standard size and the oversized pens. Clean example. XF to XXF
point. An "advanced" pen within the Balance series. |

COMMENTS:
Most Flat-top Black Sheaffer's from the 1920s-1930s have a thinner
smooth cap-band. This one is unusually wide. I've seen just a
couple-few like this over the years, vs hundreds with the typical
cap-band. A bonus for dedicated Sheafferers. Clean condition.
Hint/ghost of brassing at very lower edge of cap-band, which took my
loupe to see. Sharp imprints, nice tight clip, and sound manufacturer's
imprint |

COMMENTS: Sheaffer
did a fine job with the classic 1920s "flat top" look. After moving
from hard rubber to Celluloid, the earliest black OS pens had single
cap-band. Green I know switched to double band in late 1920s, and
perhaps black did too; I need to review my collection. With the "late"
OS's from the a1930s, a low-set clip and single cap-band ruled again.
This one is mid-late 1920s. Clean OS nib. Clean trim. Clean imprint.

Balance is the second most prevalent fountain pen in my own collection,
following Parker's Vacumatic. Top quality pen tha spanned the entire
1930s, the black oversized model (a full 9/16" outer diameter at cap
lip) was the classic "executive's pen". I own a number of
different
variants and always am happy to offer some for sale. This one has clean
plastic, imprint and clip. Under 5x loupe there is hint of brassing at
very edge of cap-band. Write a firm fine line. Nib is a proper-size
two-tone Sheaffer nib, but likely dates to about 10 years after the
pen, as it does not have "Lifetime" marking but does have "14k"
marking, both later features |

COMMENTS: The model/cluster/variant is interesting. The
wide-lined factory original "Jeweler's" cap-banfd was found on a marked
minority of Balances. I have discovered evidence that Sheaffer called
this one the Deluxe Premier (vs regular Premier with smooth thinner
capband). Oversized Black pens of this sort do not turn up so often. I doubt I've seen ten during the last decade. This one is has some strengths and weaknesses. The flaws are limited to slight play (movement) of the clip, just a bit left to right. The speckling showing on the gold-filled trim I think is tarnish not brassing, as it is limited to recesses (not the high points) of the lined cap-band. Plastic is excellent. Nib is a superb two-tone extra fine to fine point with that upturned "Waverly" character that makes most Balances nice writers. |

COMMENTS:
Gray with Red Veins is a high cachet color in the Sheaffer universe.
Often discolored even crazed, at risk for hairline cap-lip cracks,
finding clean specimens is a nontrivial venture. This one is quite
sharp, with no brassing, great color, no crazing or cracks, razor
imprint, and clean threads. The flat-ball clip on this one is the
second clip style to appear on this color Balance. Smooth proper
Sheaffer #3 nib. |

COMMENTS: A very uncommon variant, one I seem to
have introduced to the awareness of our cadre of
online flat-top Sheaffer collectors, when I found my
first of these a couple years ago. All
catalogued 3-25 orange pens are standard
girth. This one is slender girth, and short.
I have identified at least 5 variants of
the slender orange flat-end Sheaffers. Typical
high-clip long and short pens, off-catalogue "late"
low-set hump clips again long and short, and finally
a short ringtop This one of course is later
style with the low-set clip. Pen grades fine. Clean trim and nice nib, there are some fine scratches to plastic and couple quite light tooth marks and scattered tiny pin/pock marks at back end of barrel. Below are three of these uncatalogued slender orange pens from my own collection. Note the two possible clip positions. |

COMMENTS: When, a mere year or so ago, in my casual pursuit of orange "Flat Top" Sheaffers, I began to encounter (uncatalogued) slender pens, I met some measure of disbelief from some of my Sheaffer-oriented pen friends who had not seen such a critter, knew it was not catalogued, and doubted I had correctly identified the pen. Since then, he has come around to a proper worldview, though ;) The catalogues we have show only standard-girth orange plastic pens. SInce my first find I've tracked down 5 variants: long and short clip pens with both typical high-riding 1920's catalogue-style clips (like this pen, though of course not catalogued as Slender), long and short clip pens with the low-riding post-catalogue-era "1930's" styling, and... a ringtop. This one is the early style high-clip pen. |

COMMENTS:
The Autograph family found among Sheaffer's
1929-1941 Balance series feature solid gold wide
trim ring and usually 14k solid clip as well (some
standard size pens were offered with gold-filled
clip as a slightly less pricey option). This one is
an early style pen with full ball clip (note the
full ball clip lacks a Sheaffer imprint, while all
catalogued non-Autograph pens with full-ball clip
have "Sheaffer's" markings on the clip. This
one is very clean. Obviously it has been...
autographed. An executive's pen from back in the

COMMENTS: in
1940-41 Sheaffer offered Skyboy variants of three
Balance models. Save for clips marked 'Skyboy" and
in 2 of 3 cases with increased prices from
usual models (making barrel swaps tough as many
barrels are stamped -- in cents-- with original
price), the pens were regular Balances. Sheaffer
trumpeted them as being particularly safe for
flying, but no one has yet found any mechanical
differences from regular Balance. These most often
are found with the over-the-top military clip, but
long and short slender pens with standard clip also
were documented. This one is in
nice shape, noting the barrel has been
personalized, "Jean Jung". Very
smooth writer, especially for an extra-fine point. |

COMMENTS: Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The series saw frantic evolution and might be the only pen series to run the entire 1930's. It offers many collecting options to collectors. Statesman took its name in 1938, but the features of that model had been around since the very beginning: standard girth, full length, non-Lifetime nib of respectable size. The pen itself is quite clean. The nib, with smooth fine point retains its two tone effect, but has many surface scratches. Had I noticed that pre-restoration, I likely would have had the nib swapped. I've knocked $20 from price of pen. Nice writer. Good eye-appeal. |

COMMENTS: Recognized by those who know this one is a kosher "Semi Stubby" standard girth model. Might be the first I've had that features the 1000 price code imprint, suggesting relatively late issue for this anomalous pen. The cap is stubby standard length, similar to that found on Stubby Standard pens better known in earlier colors. The barrel is not as short as the Stubby but also is not as long as the full Standard. It is... intermediate. Our speculation is that this sort of pen represented attempt to use up remaining stubby caps. For somone who wants an esoteric Balance, something that does not come along every day. |

Pens cost $25 back when typical OS pen was $8.75 and one months Relief Payment from the gov't during the Great Depression ran $10. A non trivial pen. This pencil is enhanced by lack of engraving on the cap-band, uncommon on these gift/executive pens. The flaw is translucency and stress marks/crazing at top of pencil. Priced down to reflect.
