Tray 1007: Sheaffer Thin Model Touchdown 1951
All with Special Nibs

CLICK FOR LARGER PIC
COMMENTS:  Vacumania makes a large market in the 1952-9 Sheaffer Snorkel. The Thin Model Touchdown (TM TD) preceded Snorkel by a year, looking quite similar, but lacking the snorkel itself.  Exotic nibs for Snorkel and for TM TD attract attention, both for their appeal to the scribe-oriented hobbyists, and for their scarcity. Flex Triumph and Flex two-tone open nibs can be identified by lack of a stamped divider lines between the plated and gold portions.  I had the good fortune to buy two collections of special-nib pens at the Washington DC Pen Show last year. A couple never made it home with me and a couple sold at the Los Angeles Pen Show last month. There are some neat items in this bunch.

Tray 1015: Parker 75, including Special Nibs.
CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

COMMENTS: Parker 75 is a high quality pen that saw production from the 1960's-1980's, with manufacture moving from the USA to France during that period. A huge array of finishes, evolutionary tweaks, and a broad spread of interchangeable nibs, render this a highly collectable series. Cartridge/converter pens. The pens above trickled from multiple sources, and this offering does not include any of the 30+ 75's found in a recent Janesville, WI pen hoard I acquired last Autumn. Those will show up on the website one day soon, I hope.

COMMENTS  L.E. Waterman gave us  the widest range of metal-on-rubber overlay pens, with multiple metals, sizes, patterns, even a couple rubber colors in some cases.  The lined metal is the Sheraton pattern. The overlay on this one is very clean, without dings. A smidge of edge flaking and brassing can be seen on the clip.

The pen overall is clean. The Shearaton overlay is clean with just a couple scattered pin marks. It has been cleanly personalized in the cartouche, as can be seen in the photo.  The imprint on bottom of pen (the 0552 model number) is very faint, probably overly polished at one time.  The clip is the weak point with brassing at the imprinted letters and with a hint of bubbling/flaking of the gold-filled  finish at the edge of the clip all around.  The strong point of the pen is a killer nib, with remarkable flex given it has short tines and doesn't look flex at first peek. The medium-size iridium chunk writes a fine point at light touch but quickly flexes to double-broad+, with smooth line and good ink flow.

COMMENTSI have healthy respect for and a nice collection of quality metal ring-tops generally dating to late 1910's-1930 or so. They were jewelry items in their day and were meant not just for the ladies (whose dresses lacked pockets) but also for me who wore them in their suits' vest pockets. Amongst the "Big FIve" pen makers and their smaller but still quality competitors, Very nice variants can be found readily from  Sheaffer, Waterman, Wahl and Mabie. Most offered pens of this sort in sterling, gold-filled and  solid gold, with some interesting other choices used on occasion.   Key to the non-solid-metal pens is to find pens free of brassing.  Dings always matter. This one is clean. Ding free. Unbrassed.  Clean unpersonalized cartouche.   No joke, if one likes metal pens, he can build a killer collection by diverse makers at a reasonable cost by embracing the ring-tops.

This one is rather nice. One can imagine that  finding a 90 year old smooth finish pen not showing dings is no small thing.  Clean stylish personalization is well illustrated. Nib is a monster. Wet Noodle Fine to BBB, carrying the charming "Sheaffer Self-Filling" early imprint.   When I used it with slow writing, ink flow did keep up with maximal flex, but fast writing gave some skipping. Your call regarding how you write, but I knocked off a bit on price in case you want to send it to Mike Masuyama for further adjustment.

COMMENTS: I'm not certain of exact model name for this 1940's Waterman. Its proper Waterman nib is marked "rigid", the first of this marking I've seen.  Great writer with nib that is between medium and broad, with somewhat stub-like character (cross strokes thinner than downstrokes). Elegant vintage writing in modest pen.
