Pen 4133: Parker Duofold Centennial. Black  $335

Point: Medium-Broad Imprint:  NA Size: 5 1/4" 13.4cm
PRICE: $335
COMMENTS: The big modern Duofold. Nib code 83 apparently indicates medium, but this one writes on the broad side of medium, a bold signature line. Parker converter is included. The early flat-top style, the early short clip, and  the 18k nib (vs 14k) dates this I think to 1989, relatively early in the run.

COMMENTS: Yeah. I know. I deal with modern Duofolds generally only by accident. Still... my understanding is that the cap-activated BPs were offered with Centennial only early in the modern Duofold's run, during the mid-late 1980s.  Relatively scarce at best. Apparently popular with collectors of modern Duofold.  This one be clean.

COMMENTS: Parker's geometric-pattern (collectors call it the "toothbrush") Duofold arn 1939- early 1940. You can see my article on that series if you buy back copy of Fountain Pen Journal-click.  Though the "toothbrush" pattern can be seen with the green, brown and gray pens, as with most Parker's, one could have this Duofold in basic black. The black pens are bit less common than the other colors.  This one is relatively clean. Not near mint, it has about 1 mm of brassing at bottom  edge of cap-band. Clean plastic. Clean clip. Nice writer with responsive fine point.

COMMENTS:  Striped Duofolds usually turn up in higher  model lines in the three known colors.  Jet Black was done only in the $3.95 Junior and Sub-Deb models, and in the lower line button-fill pens. This Vac-Fill Sub-Deb is superb, as mint, with remarkable barrel clarity. I sell it only as I have another stickered pen in my own collection. This is the second price-stickered Sub-Deb I've seen. Good for a high-grade Black Pen Society collection.  This one has working sac, as I bought it from a fellow collector. I did not restore it the past couple years. Full function warranty applies of course, but would go gently inking this as-mint pen. Transparency as this one shows is scarce.

COMMENTS: Parker's original Duofold went streamlined in 1929. This color, a pearlescent burgundy/black mottled, was called just Burgundy by Parker. Need to double check if introduced in 1930 or 1932. This oen is Canadian issue. Veru clean plastic, imprint, color and nib. Bit of high point brassing on clip as per the photo above. Nice fine point.

COMMENTS: English Parker New Duofold from mid 1940s in mottled burgundy/black Celluloid. Killer nib.  I first encountered this series, which offered three colors and I believe no matching pencils, back around 1998, via Andy Lambrou's big book and via seeing a single brown pen in the vintage cabinet at Fountain Pen Hospital. I long ago completed the color set. Only one size was offered. I'm lucky to get spares time to time.  The pen channels the Parker Vacumatic, with its patterned cap-band, contour, feather clip and removable matching blind cap. The pen is a button filler of course, not a Vac-filler.

This one pops at a couple levels. It is very clean, probably cleaner than the one in my own collection. Plastic, trim, imprint, color all are sound. What makes it a bit nuts is the responsive flexible nib, something found more often with Parkers from England than from the USA, but still not usually found like this. The nib has one of the longest snouts i've seen in a long time. The flex is steady and responsive, relatively easy to use. I'd say the line moves from fine-medium up to broad+ with flexing. I find this one blows away the writing experience of  most of the Watermans that are pulling crazy prices lately.  Great pen and great nib .

COMMENTS: I'm fond of the striped 1940s Parker Duofolds, which riffed on the look of the Parker Vacumatic. Most are Vac-fill, though some low-line versions could be had button-fill. I have a quite comprehensive collection, and I'm always happy to find nice examples for the website. The pens above are Duofold Senior, 2nd generation, with chevron-style nib and with Vacumatic Major type cap-band. The color is Dusty Rose.

This bunch is a bit special, regarding condition. I picked up a tray of these (I did not include all in the photo). These are not just "excellent" or "collector grade" but looked to be mint, still with a that haze that those who know like to see on nibs that have not been polished in 70 years.  Barrel transparency is ridiculous, blast white with hint of yellow. The close up at bottom shows the breather tube through the as-new barrel clarity.  I had the pens restored, so they do have fresh sacs if you want to use them. I asked my friend and restorer not to polish the plastic, as these have the original satin finish that too often yields to a more mirror finish with polishing.

These are superb. As mint. Original nib haze. Original satin finish to plastic. Stunning barrel clarity, 1945 and 1946 date codes. If you really want, I can wipe down the nib with jeweler's cloth to give glowing yellow metal or can do a mild microgloss polish to the barrel and cap if you want a bit more shine. I recommend not asking for those things though. Nibs look to be typical Parker fine-medium. One or two look bit more plump than the others. Early purchasers can request nibs on the more fine or less fine side. I do have a few more of these lying about as well.

COMMENTS: I' m fond of the striped 1940s Parker Duofolds, which riffed on the look of the Parker Vacumatic. Most are Vac-fill, though some low-line versions could be had button-fill. I have a quite comprehensive collection, and I'm always happy to find nice examples for the website. This one is the Duofold Major, one size and price point down from the Senior. Full length, it is slighly more slender than Senior and if found with an elegant box/ellipse cap-band. This one, in Dusty Rose Celluloid is lovely. It has excellent color, razor sharp Parker imprint (late 1942 date code), superb yellow transparency that is not well shown in the phot, and clean trim. 1940-42 Parkers often are found with a bit of clear lacquer covering the capb-and. The speckling in the photo is flaking of that lacquer. There is no brassing.  This one likely is as nice as the example in my own collection

  5 English 1950s Parker Duofold-family pens.
Burgundy. 4 Models.

CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

COMMENTS: The venerable Parker Duofold disappeared in the USA in 1948, not to return until the 1980s. But, Parker in England continued making Duofolds at least through the 1950s, adopting style cues from that era. A variety of sizes and colors were offered. English Duofolds more often turn up with "special" nibs (broad, oblique, stub) vs the American Parker 51s fromt hat era.  I have a bunch in my collection, though I don't hunt in completist fashion.  I am overdue to do a profile.  This bunch is nice, five pens representing four models, al in desirable Burgundy.  They range from mint (with chalkmarks) doesn to moderately used. Sizes range from little Slimfold (not formally a Duofold, but related) on up to a hefty Maxima, shown at center. These make very nice writers, are high quality, and fall a bit under collectors' radar, at least in North America. See individual pens below for grading, nib and price.

COMMENTS: This sixth burgundy 1950s English Duofold slipped my gaze when I shot five pens for a single photo for the Dec 2017 website update, so here it is on its own. Junior is not tiny. It is heftier than Slimfold, about as long but slightly more slender than the Maxima in the other offering in this Update. Condition is superb, nearmint no doubt.  Nib has huge chunk of "iridium" and writes a medium-to-broad line. Not truly flex, it has enough inkflow and metal "springiness" that it easily generates a full-broad line with bit of pressure.  Lovely pen. Neat writer

COMMENTS: An iconic pen, one of the most recognized vintage American fountain pens. Double cap-bands and the non-Lucky-Curve barrel mark this a last year product before Duofold went streamlined. Clean plastic and trim. Note that the dark band at top of the clip is not brassing but was just leftover polish. I've removed it since taking the photo. COMMENTS: An iconic pen, one of the most recognized vintage American fountain pens. Double cap-bands and the non-Lucky-Curve barrel mark this a last year product before Duofold went streamlined. Clean plastic and trim, without brassing I've removed it since taking the photo. Intact Parker imprint with hint of lightness at center. Monster nib. This Duofold packs an original true stub nib. Stubs are cut wide laterally but shallow front to back, essentially a gentle and more forgiving italic point. This one write fine in cross stroke but medium to broad in downstroke, giving shaded writing without the hassle or "flex". True stubs are 1-in-100 (rarer?) amongst vintage USA-issue Parker Duofolds. A nice writer. I did further vbit of smoothening on it since taking the photos. I'm tempted to put this in my regular rotation at the hospital, since I favor stubs, especially when taking notes during our Residents' presentations.

COMMENTS: 1980s modern flat-top Duofold, done in style that channeled the 1920s pens. This is the larger Centennial, not the smaller International. Lovely condition, nearmint though clearly has met ink.  Fitting with a hard to find arrow-motif stub nib that writes an extra fine cross strok and a broad-ish downstroke, allowing shaded and elegant writing without the hassle of "flex". Stub is my favorite point for work at the hospital.

This one had turned up with a dry converter in place. After adding a bit of my own smoothening to the silky stub point, and after cleaning and ultrasound, I fitted the pen with a new converter, so you won't have to rely on cartridges. Stub nibs from this era are getting hard to find.

Parker "striped" Duofold Senior.
2nd Gen, 1942-1948. Parker's Laidtone Celluloid.

CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

One of the my major collecting foci, the striped Duofold was one of three  1940s Parker series to offer the Blue Diamond warranty on at least some models. All offered in this lot are Seniors; Senior was the largest and most expensive  (with Ingenue) model offered. .It was offered in three colors. All in this cluster are second generation, featuring a single jewel and the cap-band better known from the Vacumatic  model, Major.  The nib features the classic chevron "V" pattern, save for some of the earliest 1942 2nd-gen nibs, which have  plain "Parker Pen" markings. Relatively scarce pens are found with a two-tone V-nib, offered during a limited period, probably mid 1943 perhaps to early 1944.  One can hunt dozens of variants of the 1940-1948 striped Duofold. You should see my collection. My last offering of these a couple years ago saw 8 of the 9 pens sell within a couple months.

COMMENTS:  Parker's original Duofold ran 1921-1935, likely with late production pieces even after that. Originally of hard rubber, production switched to Celluloid, evolving later from the traditional "Flat-Top" style  to "Streamline" in 1929. Classic high-quality pen from top-tier maker Parker.

Tray 1001: Modern Parker Duofold (1980's-current)
CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

COMMENTS:  Modern Duofold, initially with "Flat Top" styling later with  streamlined contour, evoked the classic 1921-1935 original Duofold. Fountain pens use cartridge/converter. FP's can be had in larger Centennial and smaller International form. Both, though, are chunky pens. A large range of finishes exist.  This tray offers both early and late variants of modern Duofold.

COMMENTS:  This one is a 1940 black Duofold Junior, the larger of the two pens that mark the entry level to vac-fill Duofolds from this era (cheaper Duofolds can be found as button fillers, and more expensive vac-fill pens also were made, albeit not in black in the latter case). It is a "first year" pen from the "striped" Duofold series, though this is the only one (save for opaque black button-fill pens) that lacks conventional stripes.

Black vac-fill Duofolds were made 1940 through perhaps mid 1942, when Junior was phased out. That end point will need to be better defined by observation of more pens. Those made from 1941 and later have typical distinct longitudinal stripes of barrel clarity. But, the 1940 pens have "Shadow Wave" transparency as shown above, a pattern explicitly catalogued only for Vacumatic, not Duofold.

Most black Shadow Wave Duofolds are rough things as most Junior Duofolds have poor preservation of cap-band gold-filled metal (a mm of brassing on a big cap band equals "edge brassing", while a mm of brassing on thin double bands equals "total brassing"). As barrel clarity on most celluloid Parkers suffers severe ambering, most pens of this sort tend to have an unimpressive appearance. To find clean trim and good clarity on a black Duofold Junior (or smaller Sub-Deb) is a grand thing indeed.

This one is in the top five I've handled in ten years. Keep in mind it is not a "brown" Shadow Wave. Those stripes you see are not brown/black variegation, but mark a black pen with transparency showing up as golden color. The gold-filled trim is superb. Manufacturer's imprint is sharp. One superficial mark to plastic above imprint.  Responsive (verging on semi-flex) fine-medium point.

COMMENTSSenior is  the  largest model of striped Duofold. The series ran from 1940-1948. As large as a Slender Maxima Parker  Vacumatic,  it employs the Vac's filling system.  The Duofold is a high quality pen which  features the marbled-striped celluloid on a pen which essentially is a Parker Vacumatic. More than 100 variants can be identified.  Vacumania actively collects the striped Duofold series.

COMMENTS:  In pendom, size might matter, but bigger is not *always* better than smaller. The extra-small vest pocket Duofold is a model in high demand, well more valuable than middle sized pens, and giving the big-guy a run for the money. This is a charming pen. As you can see, the color on the barrel is not perfect, due to sac/ink fumes, whilst the cap color is superb. Overall excellent cosmetic condition. A nice collector's pen.

COMMENTSThe dedicated Parker striped Duofold desk pen is far less common than ais the  Parker Vacumatic desk pen- itself not so common. I've probably seen or handled  ten during the last 9 years.  This one has the blue-diamond barrel band and the correct "V" nib. It has a 1942+ plastic filler unit.  A nice find for the serious collector of striped Duofold.

A strict color hierarchy does not exist for the stripers, but my experience is that the blue-gray is the least frequently encountered color amongst the three colors found in most models. This one has sharp imprint, clean trim, occasional mark on plastic  and a quite fine yet smooth point point.  I will need to have the ink-flow increased  a bit before shipping, based on "final" testing, when i prepped this website update.

COMMENTS:  The Duofold Major (yes, Major) was the most expensive of the non blue diamond striped Duofolds and is a medium size pen. The barley-band is particularly appealing. This one is a vac-filler (there are button fill striped Duofolds out there) and is an early style double jewel pens. This model commonly seen than the Senior. A crisp excellent set with barrels stamped, "Eugene B. Mackey:
