Esterbrooks from Vacumania's Basement, Sept 2015 Website Update. 1950s
Esties make excellent starter pens. Easily
restored. Their nibs are easily tweaked and indeed easily
replaced
(screw out sub-sections) with replacement nib units found online
starting at $5 or so. The steel trim often holds up better than the
gold-plated/filled and chrome plated trim found on fancier
pens. This
bunch is offered as found (these often turn up in collections I buy.
Some fill. Most write a smooth line. They are offered without
formal restoration and without warranty. I've indicated which fill and which don't. |
Please remember there is no sales cart, as I don't want want anyone to pay for a pen
that might not still be available. Please email me to confirm
availabilty and to figure payment, which generally is via Paypal. Money
Orders and Bank Checks are taken too. My email is isaacson@frontiernet.net (yes 2 'nets'). Please copy that into your email program/browser page and drop me a note. The pens are offered in groups below |
Pen Lot

Three Fill. One needs Sac. Some nice points. No Warranty
Four Esterbrooks. Gray Large J: Nifty 2314-F Oblique Point. Fills and writes a smooth line. Red Short/Slender SJ: better "2314" oblique medium nib. Slight chip in black jewel at top of pen Green Short/Slender SJ: "2556" fine to extra fine nib\. Needs new sac (not filling properly) Copper Large J: high line "9668" medium+ nice wet line. might need nib reset to achieve slightly more dry writing

copper color seems relatively harder to find than the other colors, in
my experience. It also features a high line 9000 series nib. The short
red has an oblique nib, allowing shaded writing. Two of these need new
sacs. |

Neither Fills. Both need restoration . Nice points. No Warranty |
Two Esterbrook Dollar Pens (two-hole clip)): Early pens (early 1940s?) a bit more scarce than later variants Blue "J" (larger pen) Set: highline 9668 medium point, with matching pencil Black "J" (larger pen) in black hard rubber: 2668 Medium Point |

Pen
3866 : Esterbrook LJ (long slender) with Special Nib. $60 Vacumania's Basement.
Special Nib. Highline 9788 Flexible (Fine-Med to Broad) |
|||
COMMENTS:
Pen fills. Killer nib. Some fading at top of cap, as shown in picture.
If you want a 1950s that writes rather like a 1920s Waterman... Note this one does not fill and will need a new sac. |
Pen
3870 : Esterbrook "Transitional J" from Vacumania's Basement.
$60 SOLD
Unrestored and will need fresh sac. Smooth nib |
|||
COMMENTS:
Transitional full size (J) pen. Late 1940s? Flagt bottom, triple-ridged
jewel. Very smooth fine-XF 1551 nib. Clean threads, imprint and color. Will need resacing in order to fill. Sold from Vacumania's Basement, without warranty. 1950s Esties make excellent starter pens. Esterbrook 1934-42
Dollar Pen

COMMENTS:
All pens above are Esterbrook Dollar pens,
earlier issue and well
less common than the prevalent closed-clip. The
Dollar Pen cost, shocker, $1 and ran from 1934-1942.
It is found in
standard (full size), slender and short slender
sizes. Later
those would carry J, LJ and SJ labels respectively,
though one website
uses B, A and H for the three sizes. A variety of nibs
are presented
and I do have more nibs in storage (these can be
swapped by user simply
by unscrewing the nib assembly). Nibs typically are
found in 1000
series, 2000 series and high line 9000 series. There
are other nib
lines, too. These are in working condition, of course.
High quality
pens aimed filling the "affordable niche", Esties
offer the charm of a
prior era, great writers, sturdy plastic and trim and
reasonable price.

Clean pen but with band of darkening on back of cap. Nice writer. Smooth, esp for extra fine point. | 9550 | $50 Sold |
2 | 3428 | Standard. Black Condition: Fine |
Clean plastic. Wear to cap-band. Silky smooth high-line nib. Medium point. Great writer, better than I find in many more expensive pens (I've been using it at hospital the last few days) Note to David- maybe keep for a user. | 9668 |

Silky smooth high-line nib. Fine point. Great writer | 9556 | $85 |

Copper: Condition: Extrafine |
I've found copper to be the least prevalent color among the five typical marbled colors used for most of the Dollar Pen run. Others might disagree. | pending | $85 Sold |

Red Condition: Extrafine |
Clean trim and plastic. Cap closes firmly but only turns about 1/8 circle to close. Nice high-line nib, Firm Fine | 9555 | $55 SOLD |
6 | 3432 | Standard:
Black Condition: Flawed |
Upgraded with high-line 9000 series nib; this 9555 is quite smooth, especially for extra fine point. There is crack in the barrel threads, a significant cosmetic issue, but one that does not affect function. | 9555 | $25 SOLD |
7 | 3433 | Slender
Short: Black Condition: Extra Fine |
Clean basic Dollar Pen with remarkably smooth medium point, smoother writer than most of the high-line pens I sell. | 2668 | $70 Sold |
8 | 3434 | Standard:
Gray: Condition: Excellent |
Clean trim and plastic. Upgraded 9000 series nib, in this case a smooth extra fine. Nice writer | 9550 | $80 SOLD |
9 | 3435 | Slender
Long: Blue Condition: Excellent |
Clean trim and plastic. In what passes for my experience with Dollar Pens, the slender full length model is the least common of the three sizes. This one has a high-line 9000 series nib, 9461 indicating manifold fine, though this one is a plump fine. VERY smooth, it is a nice wet writer. | 9461 | $85 SOLD |
10 | 3436 | Standard:
Red: Condition: Excellent |
Clean pen firm fine point from the 2000 series. | 2556 | $80 SOLD |

COMMENTS: An outrageous package for the Estie aficianado. The pen is mint and perfect. The pouch (stamped with the Esterbrook log0) is more rare than the pen and is the only one i've seen to have "jewels" embedded in the surfact (hope i'm not giving away any real diamonds, here- LOL). Original instruction sheet included. The one has the only box i've handled for the purse pouch. You can see the cardboard portion in the photo, the plastic top piece (also stamped, "Esterbrook" was left out of the photo but is include, of course, in this sale. May not be returned if inked or dipped. |

COMMENTS: Estie purse pens have come into their own and are appreciated for their charming pastel colors, high quality, reasonable price point, and readily swappable nib assemblies. This one is a primo bright (light) yellow with perfect color in pristine condition. The travel purse pouch is more scarce than the pen and- in my admittedly somewhat limited exposure to Esties- is the only yellow/black i've handled. Fun Stuff. COMMENTS: Estie purse pens have come into their own and are appreciated for their charming pastel colors, high quality, reasonable price point, and readily swappable nib assemblies. Part of a large lot of Esties acquired during the last few months, this one is light pink with black end jewels, cosmetically perfect but showing the slightest signs of having met ink. COMMENTS: Estie purse pens have come into their own and are appreciated for their charming pastel colors, high quality, reasonable price point, and readily swappable nib assemblies. COMMENTS: Estie
purse pens have come into their own and are
appreciated for their
charming pastel colors, high quality, reasonable price
point, and
readily swappable nib assemblies. Part of a
large lot of
Esties
acquired during the last few months, this Dark Gray is
not so common a
color, but does have one flaw. One always must
watch for evil
phrasing like, "this pen is perfect EXCEPT FOR...".
Still... this one
has nearly no wear, minimal ink traces, but does have
a hairline stress
crack- just a mm or two- in the cap lip. Probably was
aggressively
posted once even if not used much. A working and
lovely pen
markedly discounted for a flaw all too often present
and all too
infrequently disclosed. |
