COMMENTS:
A popular high end out-of-production though relatively recent Waterman.
Looks good in basic black. I picked this up as part of a recent
near-modern collection, just fitted it with a brand new converter
(cartridge/converter pen), ultrasounded the front end for a bit, and
enjoyed writing with its smooth medium point. |

COMMENTS: Waterman's 1920s Ripple series first appeared in 1923. The #7 violated the current numbering system and at heart was a #55, with a color-coded keyhole nib replacing the #5 nib of the 55 and with a color coded band also present at top of cap. Yellow indicated a rounded point (very forgiving to use), and while catalogues cited firm quality for this point, flexible variants do turn up. This Ripple #7 is a sweet, one of the cleanest #7's I've handled, recognizing I do a bit less with this sort than do another David, a Bob and a Gary. You will see few vintage pens on this site listed as "nearmint". This one qualifies. Clean trim without brassing. "Molten" razor-sharp Waterman imprinmts. Clean smooth rubber that has not been texturized by t too much polishing (hits the red and black differently giving a physical ripple to go with the color ripple). The red has the dark terracotta or red ochre look of pen that has not oxidized giving the red a garish orange hue. Everything just pops. The "Yellow" nib is quite flexible as well. I have a couple Ripple pens in my collection (a 56 and a 58 for example), but I don't actively collect Ripple. If I did this would be at heart of collection, simply superb. This one would b good for a collection that never wants to apologize. If I get free minute I'll add writing sample. |

COMMENTS: Waterman's Man 100 series ran I believe 1980s-1990s. Many variants. The series soemwhat channeled Waterman's cylindrical "flat top" pens made prior to 1940. The Patrician variants had pierced-work cap-bands that reflected the 1930s original Patrician series. Color is Coral for this oen Medium point. Nearmint pen (it has met ink). Converter included. |

COMMENTS: Waterman
black hard rubber is not a core focus for me, though I'm blessed to won
a nice range of examples. This one is a bit interesting. Typically we
see the long standard 52 and the short/slender/ring-top 52 1/2V in
black rubber. This is a short but more tubby 52 V (no "1/2") with clip. Very crisp condition, looking like new. Perfect
color, sharp imprints, clean trim, etc. Oh, and full flex nib that
gives Waterman "Pink" a run for money. |

COMMENTS:
A step down from Patrician, the ealry 1930s #5 shared size and some
features with the model 94. The black Celluloid #5 offered Waterman's
color-coded nibs along with an inset color disc to match at butt of
pen. This one has a "red" keyhole nib, a sweet fine-medium with
moderate flexibility (semi-flex+). Writes a very nice line. Clean condition,
collector grade. |

COMMENTS: Where to start??? OK. This is the
earliest style physician's set catalogued for the
100-Year, and is the second style produced in any
100-Year pen. Triple set has Pen, Pencil and
Thermometer Case. This one is perfect regarding the
three pieces. The Thermometer certificate
correlates to the thermometer including in the
thermometer case. It is noted that the
presentation case is not perfect. The platform
holding the pens no longer is attached to the metal
internal hinge, so must be moved to the propped position
by hand. Top satin is discolored. The warranty
paper no longer adheres. May not be returned if inked or
dipped. Original Sac. Might fill. |

COMMENTS: L.E. Waterman
gave us the widest range of metal-on-rubber
overlay pens, with multiple metals, sizes, patterns,
even a couple rubber colors in some cases. The
lined metal is the Sheraton pattern. The overlay on
this one is very clean, without dings. A smidge of
edge flaking and brassing can be seen on the clip. The pen overall is clean. The Shearaton overlay is clean with just a couple scattered pin marks. It has been cleanly personalized in the cartouche, as can be seen in the photo. The imprint on bottom of pen (the 0552 model number) is very faint, probably overly polished at one time. The clip is the weak point with brassing at the imprinted letters and with a hint of bubbling/flaking of the gold-filled finish at the edge of the clip all around. The strong point of the pen is a killer nib, with remarkable flex given it has short tines and doesn't look flex at first peek. The medium-size iridium chunk writes a fine point at light touch but quickly flexes to double-broad+, with smooth line and good ink flow. |

COMMENTS: Part of the 1930 Patricia-7-94-Lady Patricia-92 range, Lady Patricia ran $5 in 1930. Moss Agate is a desirable color, less subject to discoloration than some Waterman colors from this era. Some though have fading of the metallic bronze panels. This pen... does not have that. For this pen: great color, trim and imprint. Very clean. Nice flex fine point. Note: the top metal plate (not visible when pen seen from side) has initials elegantly (and discreetly) engraved, either "L.L" or "S.S" or some such, in nice script. |

COMMENTS: Waterman's overlay pens are quite collectable. The 5x (fifty-something) models were introduced in 1917. Several overlay patterns can be found. Smooth Golldfilled such as this is less commonly seen than Filigree, Sheraton, and Gothic amongst others. The barrel has one shallow ding that causes disruption of the shadow in the picture, above. Nice flex nib. |

COMMENTS: I'm not certain of exact model name for this 1940's Waterman. Its proper Waterman nib is marked "rigid", the first of this marking I've seen. Great writer with nib that is between medium and broad, with somewhat stub-like character (cross strokes thinner than downstrokes). Elegant vintage writing in modest pen. |

COMMENTS: A grand example of the largest model of Waterman's iconic pen. The early pens in acrylic hold up far better than do the later celluloid examples. This is the first type Supersize (2nd style overall for series, as "first year" pens of single size had different look). This one pops. Clean trim and color, with smooth writing fine--medium semi-flex nib. |

COMMENTS: The early Waterman 100-Year pens are the best of that series. This one is all correct, with barrel band, bandless cap, 100-year nib. The pen grades Extra Fine. The plastic is clean. No crazing. No cracks. Excellent Color. Trim has couple tiny areas of brassing. The cap imprint is faint, about half visible. The pencil has sharp imprint and no brassing, but does have crazing at top of cap. I figured i'd toss it in with the pen :) |

COMMENTS: Well chunkier than the more commonly seen Waterman 52, the 55 would provide the template for the color-coded Waterman #7 series, a pen in Ripple plastic with color band and color name on nib indicating point style. This #5 nib (same size as the keyhole "#7" nib found in the Ripple-#7 series), is more flexible than most of the Pink (flexible) nibs I see with the Waterman #7. The mottled hard rubber shows mild oxidation. There is some flaking/brassing of trim on the clip, visible as dark edge/spatches on the clip. Cap band shows brassing as noted. Not a near mint pen but better than most. And... writing with it is a bit of an experience... a good experience. |

COMMENTS:
About the most clean 0554 I've handled. Per Waterman's
numbering system, "54" is a lever-filler with "4" nib.
The "05" indicates gold-filled overlay, in this case
the Gothic pattern. 0552 and 0554 pens turn up
readily at pen shows, I see probably a couple dozen
per year amongst all patterns. Most are worn, dinged,
engraved (worse, with scraped-away engravings) and so
forth. This one pops. Sharp "0554" on butt of pen and
solid distal Waterman imrint wrapping near
buttom of barrel. No engraving. No dings, not
even the thin rim where overlay meets dome at top of
pen. No brassing. Killer NIb. Essentially
broad/stub/flex it has a hint of oblique cut
(right-hand-writer's oblique), with English Waterman
markings. Note the symbol/coat-of-arms above the clip. Discussion I raised online --Link To Fountain Pen Board Discussion- suggests the symbol is for New York Life Insurance Co, the image at left being of the clock tower at the the company's building, The Clock Tower Building, 346 Broadway, NYC, built in 1894 |

COMMENTS: LE Waterman, oldest of the Big-4, produced a huge array of overlay pens. The 0552 1/2V effectively is a LEC (lower-end-covered) model, but this size does not receive the LEC marking as this is implicit to overlays of this size. Found in gold filled, sterling and solid gold overlays, these are the entry point to overlay Watermans. With Sterling overlay the pen is model 452 1/2V. If gold-filled , it would be 0552 1/2V. Solid gold packs the 552 1/2V imprint. This 452 1/2V features the "better" Hand Engraved Vine pattern, including the sterling lever. The cartouche is engraved "M.Y.K". . Nice writer with modest flex. COMMENTS: Waterman introduced the cone cap (not to be confused with the externally tapering taper cap) in the 1890's. It ran perhaps as late as the 1920's. Most of the early mottled pens have very subdued color, representing either fading, or simply the original appearance of "early" mottled rubber. This one pops. It has the most red (and birght red at that) I've ever seen on a mottled Waterman, though in all fairness I don't play with this series as much as with some other pens. The imprint is very sharp, far better than most. The pen of course is eye-dropper fill, rendering it best suited for desktop use at home. The clip is clean but with loss of the glossy plating as is typical to these. The nib is icing on the cake, evoking the wet noodles of the dip-pen era with "ultra" flex. WIth light touch an extra fine point, this one can flex up to double broad or more. Still, do be gentle when using, as flex nibs are fragile. I'm tempted to keep it. |

that starting in 1917, the safety pens (dial out nib,

size. The 42 has a #2 nib. That's what this one

of the Big-4, produced a huge array of overlay pens.
The 0552 1/2V effectively
is a LEC (lower-end-covered) model, but this size
does not receive the LEC marking as this is implicit
to overlays of this size. Found in gold
filled, sterling and solid gold overlays, these are
the entry point to overlay Watermans. With GF
overlay the pen is model 0552 1/2V. If sterling, it
would be 452 1/2V. Solid gold packs the 552 1/2V
imprint. This 0552 1/2V features the lined
engine turned "Sheraton" Pattern. The
cartouche is unengraved. There is a smidge of brass
around the top edge of cap and some wear/speckling
to the knurling at bottom of pen (posting wear).

COMMENTS: Waterman hard rubber 52's are highly collectable. Value ascends from smooth black to chased black to woodgrain to ripple and finally to cardinal red. The solid-gold-band variants are well less common than typical gold-filled. this one shows bit of oxidation to the rubber, but has smooth clean finish. Decent not perfect imprint. Nice writer with bit of flex. |

COMMENTS: Aikin-Lambert was bought by Waterman during the 1920's, resulting in Waterman-esque Aikins, often including flat-top pens in unusual colors (for Waterman) or seemingly with left-over Waterman material (eg. ripple). I've owned two or three of these relatively hefty Aikins in Jade celluloid. The bandless cap with flat-top styling adds to the charm. The color on this one is well better than average though not perfect. The overall even color is shade or so away from ideal, with a bit of darkening by the cap. The nib is... outstanding. Smooth with good inkflow-it can flex from fine to double broad (maybe more). A grand writer. Do treat it gently when you get it. Noodles can... snap... if overworked. |

COMMENTS:
The mid 1930's Waterman Ink View was Waterman's
answer to the Parker Vacumatic, though its engineering
was a bit more conventional. Popular
collectables, these are much more scarce than most
Vacumatic pens (guess Parker was winning the battle
back then), and this Deluxe model with triple capband
is well less common than the regular model. This one packs a Waterman Keyhole "Blue" nib usually considered a blunt stub. This one- from Canada as is the rest of pen- has a definite oblique cut to it. The pencil is flawed. The clip crimped with an early crack about 1/3 from the top. Runs across the clip. Can see in pic. Most of the short lever filling Waterman HR pens are
of the 52 1/2 V sort. The fat stubby
series (no "1/2" in the model number) as i follow it
ranges from 51V (actually not so fat for that one) up
to 56V. A cardinal red 52 V is heftier than the
slender line pens (sort of by definition, i s'pose).

COMMENTS: Waterman's Ripple hard rubber pens are key
collectables from the 1920's. The #7, with color coded
cap insert and nib, is based on the Model 55. really
the 01855 given the trim style. Unlike many,
this example has superb HR, with no texturization
(caused by overpolishing a pen withvariable hardness
due to colorants). Imprints are better than some and
worse than others. The main barrel imprint is solid,
the lower imprint is light. The bottom "7" is sharp.
The RED nib is a flexible nib, and this one gets close
to some of the PINK nibs for flex. No craquelure is
present such as is seen on so many of the cap
inserts. Trim shows the usual clip-ball brassing
but also a speck or two on capband and about a quarter
of the lever. A serviceable #7 with nice nib and
modest wear but with no fatal flaws, |

A most unusual Waterman. Canadian issue, it is done in a
plastic i'd not seen before and could not identify with
my standard texts. Indeed, the color seems to evoke the
lower line company Wearever, though i don't insist the
plastic is identical. A charming pen in a strange
plastic. Couple
imperfections to note. The very bottom of
the pen had small star-shaped hair thin crack probably
from having been whacked on a table top. This has been
sealed, is in a no-stress area, but does affect grade.
The pen has but trace brass at clip edge. The smudges on
front of clip in the pic were pre-polish and no longer
are present. Nib is full flex but somewhat
scratchy. A weird Waterman. Anyone with other info
about this one is invited to share. |

COMMENTS: Waterman's answer to the Parker Vacumatic, the Ink-View is popular with collectors though far less prevalent than the Vacumatic. Today, they are considerably more scarce, espcially clean. This one has a great nib- smooth with moderater flex. As is often the case with these, the originally glued-on metal "waterman" plate (with globe motif) was lost from very bottom of pen. One of Gary's replacement plates (identical in look- very nicely done) has been attached with near-indestructible epoxy and should outlast you. If this info confuses, please drop me a line for more details. Clean pen with no crazing or cracks. |

COMMENTS: Waterman's answer to the Parker Vacumatic, the Ink-View is popular with collectors though far less prevalent than the Vacumatic. This one is a greeny with Waterman Purple Nib- Fine-XF Firm. I had not noticed it, but was informed by my restoration expert that there was a crack in the plastic of the blind cap at the back end of the pen. This lesion has been sealed. I can identify it with a good loupe. Pen has been priced down drastically |

this is implicit to overlays of this size. Found
in gold filled, sterling and solid gold overlays, these
are the entry point to overlay Watermans. With GF
overlay the pen is model 0552 1/2V. If sterling, it
would be 452 1/2V. Solid gold packs the 552 1/2V

COMMENTS: Not
your typical Waterman. The 12 1/2 (Slender form of the
12) often (always???) was marketed as a Secretary Pen.
Overlays crop up not so often. A cone-cap (internal cone
shape, not to be confused with an external cone-like cap
we call Taper Cap) eyedropper-filler, i'd guesstimate
production to around 1910. Have not had time to pull up
my Tefft Syllabus to confirm. This one is all original. I have not polished away the patina on the metal (happy to give it bit of a shine for you, if you prefer). The original HR has a gentle olive oxidation, and I will not potion-ize this collectable Waterman to darken the rubber. If you would like the rubber blackened, i will be happy to refer you to two trusted restorers who do such work. The overlay has one tiny flaw- a slight separation/crack on one of the loops of metal- almost invisible. Photo can be provided on request. I knocked $100 from the price of the pen for this. Oh yeah, the nib. Fine to Triple Broad Ultra Flex. LIke a Dip Pen. Wee bit of toothiness. Be gentle with this. Heavy hand could shatter the nib. |

COMMENTS: The

out a bit light as the background color seems richer and
darker in the hand. Great nib. The 92 was the
affordable alternative in the early 1930's, to the
Patrician, #7, 94 and Lady Patricia. Pen has the "usual"
clip ball brassing and pen has brassing of the cone as
turning the cone is how the lead is extended.

COMMENTS:
Waterman 55- starting in 1917- indicated a lever filling
screw cap pen, with a #5 nib. Other size nibs
would result in differnet numbers within that
"50's" (or 5X) series. The same size as the
later-introduced Waterman #7 (with all those "color"
nibs and cap inserts), this bandless woodgrain pen is
less common than many of the #7's. At risk of engaging in hyperbole (no! really!) I labrel this one a gem. Incredibly flexible nib packed in an 80 year old near mint pen. For a primo collection. |

COMMENTS: Where to start. OK. Most lever
fill short thin ringtop Waterman pens are 0552 1/2V.
However, the lever was intro'd one year before the
"50's" series nomenclature appeared. Thus, first year
lever fillers of this size get the 0512 1/2V PSF (05 is
gold filled, 12 is the core pen, 1/2 indicates thin, V
indicates short, and PSF indicates Pocket Self Filler).
One wonders why they changed the names. Not. And, it's one of the most beautiful patterns- Pansey Panel, alternating smooth columns with a hand-engraved flower motif (though i do not know that hand engraving, per se, was done) Only flaw on pen is tiny edge ding at very bottom. Imprint is sharp. Engraving remains deep and crisp. Nib flexes from Fine to triple broad. Amazing nib... treat it with care. |

COMMENTS:
Collecting
the overlay models from LE Waterman poses a
daunting task to hobbyists. Numerous sizes, overlay
materials, patterns- not to mention evolution of core
pen - have given us one heckuva lot to sort
through. For the period starting in 1917, lever
filling pens generally were labelled as part of the
fifties series (or 5x). Overlays were produced
in gold-filled, sterling silver, and solid gold.
Using the 52 1/2 (slender full length) pen as basis,
the 0552 1/2 marks gold-filled, 452 1/2 indicates
silver, and 552 1/2 designates the lofty solid gold
model. When produced, the cost of the pen rose as one
progressed from Silver to Gold-Filled to Solid Gold.
Today, the silver overlay outvalues gold-filled
because silver and solid gold do not brass, whilst
gold-filled will show base metal when worn.
Solid Gold, though, cost far more than the other two
overlays and now is found far less often. A neat
pen.
This pen is marked in four places as 14k- the cap overlay, the barrel overlay, the lever (on inside) and the clip. The overlay is quite clean save that the top dome has one broad but shallow ding (as if pen was tapped on its head). The HR shows light oxidation. The 552 1/2 imprint is sharp on butt of pen and the imprint near the bottom of the pen is complete with some wear showing. Ron Zorn dropped a sac into it last week and it is a darn nice writer with quite flexible nib. A sweet Waterman. |

COMMENTS: The Waterman #7 started life as a Red Ripple Hard Rubber model featuring (generally) 7 different color-coded nib options, itself matched by a colored ring at top of pen. Around 1930 this Black Plastic model replaced the HR pen and became the second largest plastic pen in LE Waterman's line up, falling just below the size and cost of the vaunted Patrician. Color Coding persisted, and the pen featured nibs inscribed with a color, which was matched by a colored plastic insert (also marked "7") on the butt of the pen. This is a nice example with no franken-parts. The nib matches the colored insert. The "green" nib is a firm medium |

The knurling at bottom of pen (the milled, denticled, what-have-you longitudinal lines at butt of pen) have been worn smooth about 50% , presumably from pressure from the posted cap. |

COMMENTS: The Waterman #3 was introduced in the mid 1930's and supplanted the #92 at the sub-$5 price point. A nice sized pen, often with great nibs, it receives less pendom play than do some of Waterman's higher line pens from that era. This one has a great. Most of these feature trashed chrome trim. COMMENTS: LE Waterman, oldest of the Big-4, produced a huge array of overlay pens. The 0552 1/2V is a lower-end-covered model, but this size does not receive the LEC marking as all overlay pens in this sidze had a covered bottom. very pretty wee lil' pen. $150 |

COMMENTS: Waterman hard rubber pens are highly collectable. Made from beautifully patterned hard rubber, Woodgrain was produced in numerous sizes and with different filling mechanisms. Many are faded, overpolished- resulting in a textured finish as the black and red abrade at different rates- or cracked. This one, on the other hand, sparkles. The trim is perfect. The clip is tight. Both barrel imprints (and the "52" on the bottom) are very crisp. A quite nice example of a basic Ripple. $235 |

COMMENTS: Waterman Ripple pens are highly collectable. Made from beautifully patterned hard rubber, these were produced in numerous sizes and with different filling mechanisms. Many are faded, overpolished- resulting in a textured finish as the black and red abrade at different rates- or cracked. This one, on the other hand, sparkles. The trim is perfect. The clip is tight. The single barrel imprint (correct on Canadian pens) and the "52" on bottom are razor sharp. A nice example of a basic Ripple. $230 |

Point: FINE. high flex smooth | Imprint: sharp,complete,excellent | Size: pen 5 3/8" long | PRICE: $450 |
COMMENTS: Full Flex in a crisp silver overlay pen. FFD engraved in Cartouche on barrel overlay. "pres by store 1113" engraved around top of cap. An excellent entry into the realm of full-size overlay LE Waterman pens, with killer nib tossed in the mix. Please not that i left the original patina intact. A quick polish would make the silver glow like new (the overlay is very sharp), but i prefer to preserve the vintage look. |

to 1-2mm from barrel. i opted not to risk a fix on
this one.
